Here's the latest from this weekend's games in the Liberty Conference.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead 28-0 at the 30-minute mark, but the Jumbos fought back and managed to get a try before the break. UConn added a penalty at the end of the half to pull ahead 31-7.
The Huskies made several substitutes to begin the second half, but Tufts was more than ready after the break and scored quickly on a misplayed kickoff reception by the host team. The Jumbos put their second try on the board two minutes into the second period to make it 31-12. In its first D1A effort, Tufts continued to play tough and began to gain momentum as the teams traded tries to make the score 38-19 for the Huskies.
Hard running by UConn backs, led by senior captain Joe Phillips (who scored two tries) and freshmen Shane Palmer (who also bagged a brace), resulted in another for the hosts. A penalty kick gave the Huskies a 48-19 lead with 10 minutes left to play.
UConn emptied the bench and almost scored. However, a decision to tap and run on a penalty led to a turnover, and Tufts ran the ball all the way back for a bonus-point try as time expired.
"We were happy to see our open running game and ball possession working well while building a first half lead," UConn coach Bob Merola said. "Knowing Tufts, we knew game was far from over, and we had to work hard in second half to hold back a more determined Tufts team. We need to continue striving for the hard, quick pace of an 80-minute D1 game, but our overall fitness wasn't where we need to be so it looks like little fitness work in training sessions will be one goal over next two weeks before we tackle next Liberty Conference opponent UMass."
Iona led 47-0 at halftime.
"When Iona plays as a team, we are very difficult to beat," Gaels head coach Bruce McLane said. "When we play as individuals, we are average."
