Rugby's most successful team have appointed their next head coach following the conclusion of this year's Rugby World Cup. 

Current Crusaders boss Scott Robertson will take over from current All Blacks head coach Ian Foster. 

After months of speculation and rumours that Robertson would be appointed, the 48-year-old former All Black will lead the team to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. 

Speaking at a press conference where Robertson was unveiled, he said: "It's an honour to be named as the next All Blacks head coach," 

"It's a job that comes with a huge amount of responsibility, but I'm excited by the opportunity to make a contribution to the legacy of the black jersey. 

"To represent your country as a coach or player is the ultimate honour in sport, and it's humbling to be given that opportunity. I can't wait." 

In the wake of an August 2022 review, the decision was made to keep Foster on through to the end of this year's Rugby World Cup. 

Having seen a rather significant dip in form by their high standards last season, the All Blacks set-up, particularly Foster, was under immense pressure. 

Historic home losses to Ireland (twice) and Argentina had Foster on the ropes. Still, a Rugby Championship title and undefeated November saw the All Blacks end 2022 as the top-ranked Southern Hemisphere team. 

Explaining their reasoning for appointing Robertson whilst Foster was still in the post. New Zealand Rugby said: "significant competition for elite coaching talent" meant they could not delay. 

"The decision to appoint the next All Blacks head coach ahead of the World Cup was not taken lightly, but we believe it was the right decision for New Zealand Rugby and the All Blacks and will set the team up for future success," said NZR board chair Patsy Reddy.

Robertson, who is known by his nickname ‘Razor’ played 23 times for the All Blacks during his playing career and has won six Super Rugby titles as the Crusaders' head coach.
