Heineken Champions Cup: Montpellier Number Eight Zach Mercer's Red Card
Heineken Champions Cup - Exeter Chiefs vs Montpellier, Zach Mercer red card for high tackle.
French Top 14 giants Montpellier travelled to Sandy Park in Exeter to tackle the Chiefs in a Heineken Champions Cup last-sixteen clash.
Playing out an all-time classic, the two sides showed their quality as they put on a show for all in attendance.
In what was a topsy-turvy match-up that would take until the last play of overtime to decide who was going through, the game would end in a 33 – 33 draw.
Due to the rules of the competition, it would be the Chiefs who would progress as the home side gets the nod in the event of a stalemate.
Whilst there can be little arguing that either side deserved the result more than the other, there were several contentious officiating calls that left fans scratching their heads.
Depending on your persuasion, a case could be made in a number of incidents for a different outcome.
One such incident that will likely be debated over the coming days is the sending-off of Montpellier number eight Zach Mercer.
Coming in as a second defender, Mercer makes contact with the head of Chiefs backrower Christ Tshiunza.
Showing the incident on the big screen, boos can be heard raining down from the Sandy Park stands.
Following a thorough review, the match officials concluded that the incident warranted a red card.
