Durban-based United Rugby Championship side the Cell C Sharks have announced that former head coach John Plumtree will assume the role of head coach in July. 

Plumtree’s return to Durban will see Neil Powell return to his role as Director of Rugby. 

Having both played for and coached the Sharks, New Zealander Plumtree is no stranger to Durban and the Sharks Union. During his first stint as head coach in Durban, Plumtree coached the Sharks to a Curry Cup title in 2008 and a Super Rugby final appearance in 2012.

 Since his time in Durban, Plumtree has coached in Japan, New Zealand and Ireland, serving as an assistant to both the Irish national team and the All Blacks. 

Growing up in Taranaki, New Zealand, Plumtree represented Taranaki as a player and was invited to trial for the All Blacks in 1989.

He would then relocate to his wife’s hometown of Durban, where he would begin his first stint with the Sharks as a player. In a highly successful run, Plumtree would win two Curry Cup medals under legendary coach Ian McIntosh. This success at the provincial level would lead to a call-up to the South African 7s side, where he would play in two tournaments. 

Speaking on Plumtree’s addition, Powell said: “This is an exciting time and a great opportunity to welcome back two vastly experienced coaches that understand our culture, the environment and know what it takes to wear this jersey. 

“Plum is an experienced and astute coach that has coached at the highest level. We are delighted to have him return to lead our senior team. I am sure he is looking forward to hitting the ground running in July as we prepare for the new season ahead.” 

Plumtree added his excitement at returning to Durban, saying: “Durban has always been my home away from home for many years, and I have the fondest memories of my time here both as a player and a coach. I look forward to returning to the Sharks set-up and working with a talented group of players. 

“The Sharks are a proud global brand, and naturally, everyone associated with the brand wants results. Excellence is non-negotiable, and I am fully committed to doing everything I can to achieve our objectives and make our fans proud.”
