Fiji Coach Simon Raiwalui Steps Down After World Cup Exit
Fiji Coach Simon Raiwalui resigns after his team's World Cup disappointment. Explore the reasons behind this pivotal decision.
Fiji head coach Simon Raiwalui has confirmed that he has stepped down as the nation’s head coach following his team's quarterfinal exit from the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
The 49-year-old confirmed the news on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.
Well I guess it is time to make it official, specifically what the next cycle will look like for Fiji Rugby…I will not be seeking an extension of employment with FRU past 31st December. Thanks again to the players, staff & all the supporters, it has been quite a ride! 🇫🇯🇫🇯🇫🇯

A former second row for the national team, Raiwalui earned 39 international caps in his playing days, while also representing some of the biggest clubs in European Rugby.
Confirming that his contract will run through to Dec. 31, Raiwalui’s resignation after just one year in charge comes as somewhat of a shock to outsiders.
Leading his nation to its first win over Australia in 69 years, as well as a victory over Georgia, ensured a place among the final eight teams at the World Cup.
In Fiji’s other two pool matches, the Fijians came just short against Wales and Portugal.
Completing their campaign, the Flying Fijians lost by a mere six points to England, despite a furious comeback in the second half.
Who will replace Raiwalui has yet to be announced.
