Reigning United Rugby Champions, Munster, is facing a setback, as the team's Rugby World Cup-winning second-row, RG Snyman, is set to undergo chest surgery.

Snyman, who signed a two-year deal with the Irish giants in 2022, will be unavailable for an unspecified period.

Snyman's time at Munster has been plagued by injuries. He made his debut in August 2020 but ruptured his ACL seven minutes into the game, keeping him sidelined until September 2021.

Unfortunately, in his third game back, he re-ruptured his cruciate ligament during a match against Scarlets in the United Rugby Championship.

After recovering from his second injury in March the following year, Snyman played a crucial role in Munster's successful URC title campaign, primarily as an impact player coming off the bench.

His performances also earned him a spot in the South African Springboks team, contributing to their second consecutive Rugby World Cup title win in Paris last month.

Now, Snyman is set to undergo surgery in his native South Africa, with no specified timeline for his return to Munster.

Munster head coach Graham Rowntree and his staff have shown confidence in promising young talents Edwin Edogbo and Thomas Ahern in recent months.

While these players are relatively inexperienced, they are seen as the future of the second-row position for the URC champions.

Munster also will welcome back two Rugby World Cup stars, Tadhg Beirne and Jean Kleyn, to its second row, and 25-year-old Fineen Wycherley has proven himself as a top-class lock.

While the absence of Snyman undoubtedly is a blow for the club, they have options in place to mitigate his loss.

Munster's fans will hope for a successful season, despite the setback for their 6-foot-9 superstar.
