Montpellier Hérault Rugby, also known as Montpellier or MHR, survived a challenge to their status in Top 14 when they defeated FC Grenoble Rugby in the relegation playoff, 20-18. The win kept Montpellier, who finished 9-0-17 in Top 14 play last season, in France’s highest level of professional rugby. 

Now the goal is to avoid that situation and strive to qualify for not only the Top 14 playoffs but for the Investec Champions Cup.

It wasn’t long ago that Montpellier wouldn't have been worried about relegation. The club won the Top 14 championship in 2022 and were runners-up in 2018. But the club finished 11th in 2023 after winning its first title in 2022. 

That offseason the club lost star Handre Pollard and struggled to regain its championship form. They look to change the trend when Top 14 play begins on Sept. 7 against Lyon at 8:30 a.m. ET. 

Along with the Top 14 slate, Montpellier Hérault Rugby will play in the EPCR Challenge Cup and begin the tournament in Pool 2.
