South Africa staged a thrilling second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 21-12 in the fourth round of the Rugby Championship, edging closer to securing the title. Trailing 9-3 at halftime, the Springboks seized control after the break, with captain Siya Kolisi leading the charge.

Kolisi's try early in the second half, converted by Handré Pollard, gave the reigning world champions their first lead of the match at 10-9. Damian McKenzie’s penalty briefly brought the All Blacks within a point at 13-12, but a missed penalty from McKenzie moments later proved costly.

With New Zealand reduced to 14 players following a yellow card to Tyrel Lomax for obstructing Cheslin Kolbe, South Africa capitalized on the man advantage. Malcolm Marx powered over the line in the corner to secure a crucial second try and extend the Springboks’ lead.

The victory not only put South Africa in pole position to claim the Rugby Championship title but also saw them lift the Freedom Cup, a trophy contested by the two teams since 2004. Kolisi praised his team’s resilience after the hard-fought win.

"We knew the All Blacks would come hard at us," said Kolisi. "It's very special to win the Freedom Cup in such a significant year, 30 years after democracy. I'm proud of the boys."

New Zealand dominated the first half, relying on McKenzie's boot for their points, but their inability to finish off key moments allowed the Springboks to stay in the game. Despite missing opportunities, All Blacks captain Scott Barrett acknowledged the challenge of facing a side as clinical as South Africa.

The Springboks will next face Argentina in their remaining fixtures, both away and at home, as they close in on the Rugby Championship crown.
