Connacht Rugby Captain Cian Prendergast Signs Three-Year Contract Extension

Connacht Rugby proudly announced Tuesday that club captain Cian Prendergast has signed a new three-year deal, ensuring his place with the province until at least 2028.

This commitment by Prendergast solidifies his growing legacy at Connacht, where he quickly has become an influential figure on and off the field.

Prendergast, 24, was appointed captain at the start of this season by head coach Pete Wilkins, marking a new chapter for the club, which is embarking on an ambitious period of development.

Originally signed to Connacht’s Academy in 2020, Prendergast made his professional debut in an away match against Edinburgh that October. Since then, he has steadily climbed the ranks, moving from academy hopeful to a cornerstone of Connacht’s forward pack.

His first season saw him make 10 appearances, and he secured his first professional contract the following year, where he featured in 20 of Connacht’s 24 matches. His standout performances earned him a senior debut for Ireland against Fiji in the 2022 Autumn Nations Series, the first of three international caps to date.

With his recent elevation to captain, Prendergast is supported by vice-captains Dave Heffernan and Joe Joyce, as well as Connacht’s broader leadership team. His influence extends into his selection for the Irish squad for the upcoming Autumn Nations Series, further demonstrating his talent and leadership abilities at the national level.

Prendergast expressed his excitement at the extension, saying: “I’m thrilled to be committing my future to Connacht for a further three years. I’ve enjoyed every minute since arriving four years ago, and with the new stadium and HPC on the way, there’s a very exciting future ahead. I can’t wait to play my part in that and represent the people of Connacht for at least another three seasons and give them the success we believe is possible.”

Head coach Pete Wilkins also spoke highly of the deal, emphasizing Prendergast’s vital role at the club.

“Keeping Cian at Connacht for three more seasons is massive news for the club," Wilkins said. "He’s a natural leader who raises standards every day, on and off the field, and inspires those around him. His continual drive for self-improvement means that at just 24, the best years of his career are still ahead of him, so I’m delighted that he’ll be wearing the green of Connacht during that time.”
