Double Rugby World Cup-winning No. 8 Duane Vermeulen noted that both teams have evolved since their last meeting in the pool stages of last year’s Rugby World Cup in France.
The Springboks landed in Edinburgh on Sunday and began their match preparations Tuesday, starting with gym work and field training.
Anticipation is high among players, with Boks lock Ruan Nortje and Vermeulen both expressing excitement about the challenge Scotland poses.
“We had a productive week training in Jersey, which was critical in preparing us for this week’s test,” Nortje shared. “Scotland are a dynamic team with threats across the field, so we know it’s going to be a demanding game, but we’re excited to take on that challenge.”
Nortje emphasized the importance of physical and mental readiness, highlighting Scotland’s robust forward pack.
“We’re expecting a fierce contest upfront, so our preparation has to be spot-on," he said. "We need to enter the match fully ready for what they bring."
Vermeulen, who has been assisting the Springboks in a coaching role since the beginning of the season, acknowledged Scotland’s progress and expects both teams to bring something new to this encounter.
“Our camp in Jersey was important for game preparation and adapting to the conditions here,” Vermeulen explained. “Facing Scotland this week will be a fresh challenge. They’ve changed their approach significantly over the last few years, so we anticipate a real Test match atmosphere.”
When asked about comments from Scotland coach Gregor Townsend regarding changes in the Springboks' attack under Tony Brown’s influence, Vermeulen said:
“With Tony and Jerry (Flannery) on our coaching team, we’ve added some new elements to our game. Scotland are also evolving, and their tactical approach has been effective.”
As for the Scottish team’s approach and how it may differ from previous encounters, Vermeulen expects a high-intensity performance from the hosts.
“They’ll have the support of a passionate home crowd, which will only add to their motivation,” he said. “They’ve also brought in some strong performers, and with Glasgow winning the Vodacom United Rugby Championship last season, they’re clearly on a good track.”
Meanwhile, Nortje is thrilled for the opportunity to gain regular playing time this season. Having started in five of the six games in South Africa’s successful Castle Lager Rugby Championship campaign, he reflected on his journey.
“South Africa has a proud tradition of world-class locks, so it’s always a competitive position,” Nortje said. “For me, every game is a chance to give my best, as if it’s my last. Hard work has brought me here, and I’m embracing every moment.”
