Pool Four of the 2024-2025 Investec Champions Cup promises to be a thrilling contest, bringing together a blend of traditional European heavyweights and emerging powerhouses from the Gallagher Premiership, United Rugby Championship, and Top 14. With a mix of championship pedigree and youthful exuberance, this group will showcase some of the best talent Europe has to offer.

Representing the United Rugby Championship (URC), the Glasgow Warriors are firm favourites to top the pool. As the reigning URC champions, they possess a blend of experience and youthful dynamism that will make them a formidable force in Europe. With Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu leading the charge, the Warriors will look to use their blend of pace, power, and set-piece dominance to assert themselves at the top of the group. Alongside them, the DHL Stormers will aim to build on their strong recent form, with their powerful and skilful backline, led by two-time Rugby World Cup winner Damian Willemse, making them a constant threat.

From the Gallagher Premiership, Harlequins, last year's Champions Cup losing semi-finalists, are primed to push for a top-two spot. With England flyhalf Marcus Smith orchestrating their attack, they will be dangerous both in attack and defence. However, they will face stiff competition from Sale Sharks, whose combative and physical style will make them a challenging opponent. England backrow Tom Curry, who will look to lead from the front alongside his identical twin Ben, will be central to Sale's ambitions.

Representing the Top 14, the three-time Champions Cup winners RC Toulon and Racing 92 are both teams with strong histories and big ambitions, though they may struggle to match the intensity and depth of the URC and Premiership sides. Toulon, with Scotland scrumhalf Ben White pulling the strings, will aim to use their experience and depth to remain competitive, while Racing 92, despite their squad of stars including former England captain Owen Farrell, will need to find consistency if they are to challenge for the top spots.

Key Players

Sione Tuipulotu – Glasgow Warriors

The Scotland captain is the heartbeat of Glasgow’s midfield. With his aggressive running lines and leadership on and off the field, Tuipulotu’s performances will be crucial in helping the Warriors navigate this tough pool.

Damian Willemse – DHL Stormers

The double Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok is a master of attack and defence. Willemse’s ability to control the game, coupled with his flair for the spectacular, will be vital as the Stormers aim to secure a top spot in Pool Four.

Marcus Smith – Harlequins

England’s star flyhalf brings creativity, vision, and tactical kicking to Harlequins. Smith’s ability to unlock defences with his feet and his sharp rugby mind makes him one of the most exciting players in the tournament.

Tom Curry – Sale Sharks

The England backrow is renowned for his physicality and work rate. Curry, alongside his identical twin Ben, will look to lead Sale’s defensive charge and dominate at the breakdowns, crucial for their hopes of progressing from the group stages.

Ben White – RC Toulon

The Scotland scrumhalf’s quick distribution and sharp decision-making will be key for Toulon. With their mix of youth and experience, White’s leadership at half-back will be central to Toulon’s game management.

Owen Farrell – Racing 92

The former England captain brings calmness, experience, and tactical brilliance. Farrell’s role as Racing’s flyhalf will be essential in dictating the tempo of the game and ensuring Racing's attacking potency is maximized.

Key Match-up

Glasgow Warriors vs. Harlequins

This match could prove pivotal in determining the pool's top spot. Glasgow’s power and set-piece dominance will clash with Harlequins’ exciting attacking game and Marcus Smith's brilliant playmaking. Glasgow's forwards, led by Tuipulotu, will test Harlequins’ defensive resolve, while Smith will look to outwit them with his creativity. With both teams possessing plenty of firepower, this match promises to be a highlight of Pool Four.

Pool Prediction

The Warriors’ combination of strength, speed, and experience makes them favourites to top Pool Four. With Tuipulotu’s leadership and a powerful forward pack, they should have enough to outlast their rivals and claim the top spot.

Although they face stiff competition from Glasgow, Harlequins’ attacking flair and Smith’s ingenuity will ensure they remain in contention throughout the pool stages. A solid run should see them edge out the DHL Stormers for second place.

The Stormers will be a dangerous side, especially with Willemse and fellow Springbok playmaker Manie Libbok pulling the strings in attack. However, their physicality and inconsistency in key moments might hinder them, leaving them in third place.

Despite having a strong squad, Racing 92’s lack of consistency could cost them. With Farrell at the helm, they will certainly be competitive, but they might struggle against the intensity of the URC and Premiership sides, finishing fourth.

Toulon’s rich history in European competition will count for little if they cannot bring the required consistency. Ben White and former Welsh international Dan Biggar must manage the game meticulously, but they may fall short in this tough group, leaving them in fifth place.

Sale’s physical style will be difficult for many teams to handle, but they may lack the firepower to challenge the bigger European teams in this pool. Despite the efforts of Tom Curry and his twin Ben, they are likely to finish last in the pool.
