Ireland Rugby Picks Up Historic Win Over Wallabies To Close 2024 Season

Ireland Rugby finishes the 2024 International Rugby season with a thrilling win over improving Wallabies of Australia.

Why Americans Should Support Ulster Rugby

Australia Rugby was up for the challenge against the No. 2 team in the world, but on the 150th anniversary of Irish Rugby, and playing in Dublin, the Irish scored late to win 22-19 on Nov. 30.

Gus McCarthy scored a try in the 72nd minute to give Ireland a 20-19 lead, and Jack Crowley nailed the conversion, as Ireland closed out the 2024 international season with a win in front of a packed Aviva Stadium.

The celebration of Irish rugby, which saw Cian Healy become the most-capped player in the nation's history, was almost muted.

Australia led at halftime and took a 10-0 lead early, as former Irish coach Joe Schmidt continued to show the growth he's made since taking over the Wallabies earlier this year.

Caelan Doris gave Ireland a brief lead in the second half, but Noah Lolesio hit a penalty kick from 48 meters out to regain the lead. Moments later, McCarthy scored after a lineout near the endzone.

Cian Healy And Ireland Rugby History

Ireland Rugby is celebrating 150 years of rugby and no, Cian Healy didn't start in that first game.

It just feels like he was one of the lads in that first match. For 15 years, he's been a fixture for Ireland. The reserve prop needs one more appearance to make Ireland history.

And he does so against the team he started it all against, Australia. Healy played in this match in 2009 against Australia, a 10-10 draw.

Andy Farrell Sticking With Sam Prendergast

Much of the Ireland Rugby narrative this autumn has centered on the No. 10 spot in the lineup. Jack Crowley, who plays for Munster Rugby, was taken out of the lineup in favor of Sam Prendergast of Leinster Rugby.

The 21-year-old has replaced Johnny Sexton on Leinster at the fly-half, while Crowley replaced Sexton on the national team following the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Andy Farrell Looking For Win Before Coaching British And Ireland Lions

Andy Farrell, the head coach of Ireland since 2018 when he replaced Joe Schmidt, the current Australia coach, is taking a sabbatical following this match to coach the British and Ireland Lions in 2025 during its tour of Australia. Farrell will not coach in the Six Nations, instead Simon Easterby, the defence coach, will lead Ireland.
