Australian rugby star Jordan Petaia has announced a bold career shift, stepping away from rugby to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL. The 24-year-old centre, a cornerstone of the Wallabies with 31 caps and a seven-season tenure at the Queensland Reds, will join the NFL's International Player Pathway Program (IPP) in 2025.

Petaia revealed the move on social media, describing it as the fulfilment of a shared dream with his late father, who passed away in 2020. “The decision to step away from rugby hasn’t been easy and one that took a great deal of consideration,” Petaia wrote. “Thank you to the NFL IPP for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I am very grateful and excited for the experience that lies ahead.”

The pathway program has been a springboard for athletes like compatriot Jordan Mailata, a former rugby league player who transitioned successfully to the NFL and now stars for the Philadelphia Eagles. Petaia will relocate to Florida’s IMG Academy in January, where he’ll undergo intensive training to develop his skills for American football.

Despite his undeniable talent, Petaia’s rugby career has been marked by injuries, including a shoulder issue that sidelined him for much of this year’s Super Rugby season and the Wallabies’ international campaign. Reflecting on his decision, Petaia told the Sydney Morning Herald: “I’m taking this opportunity on a dream I’ve had, not only for myself, but a dream I shared with my old man. He’d be looking down and shouting at me to take the opportunity. I think I probably would have regretted it if I didn’t.”

Petaia’s departure marks a significant loss for Australian rugby, but Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss expressed support, calling him a “great Reds player.” The Reds have left the door open for Petaia’s return should his NFL ambitions fall short.

With his speed, athleticism, and determination, Petaia is poised to make the most of this opportunity, knowing the journey ahead will test his adaptability and perseverance. “There are no guarantees,” he acknowledged. “It’s an opportunity to train, learn the game, and showcase my potential.”
