Racing 92 secured a hard-fought 23-12 victory over Harlequins in their Investec Champions Cup encounter, using a combination of disciplined defense and moments of attacking brilliance to prevail at Stade Dominique Duvauchelle in Paris on Dec. 7.

Harlequins was first on the board, when Alex Dombrandt powered over the line in the ninth minute, though Marcus Smith missed the conversion, leaving the visitors with a 5-0 lead.

Racing 92 responded in the 15th minute, as Nolann Le Garrec crossed for a try and converted it himself, giving the hosts a 7-5 edge. 

Late in the half, Wame Naituvi extended Racing’s lead with a try in the 39th minute, though Le Garrec missed the conversion. Racing went into halftime leading 12-5.

Racing 92 Holds Off Harlequins’ Charge In Second Half

Harlequins struck early in the second half, as Will Porter scored a try in the 43rd minute, converted by Marcus Smith, to level the game at 12-12.

Racing reclaimed control in the 58th minute when Le Garrec slotted a penalty to edge ahead 15-12. 

Max Spring added a try in the 61st minute, though Le Garrec’s missed conversion left the door slightly open at 20-12. 

Racing extended its lead further in the 66th minute with another penalty from Le Garrec to make it 23-12.

Despite yellow cards to Josua Tuisova and Ibrahim Diallo in the final minutes, Racing’s defense held firm, denying Harlequins any chance of a comeback.

What's Next For Racing 92 And Harlequins Rugby?

Racing 92 will travel to Sale to play the Sharks in Round 2, while the Quins will host the DHL Stormers.

Twenty-four clubs have qualified for the 2024-2025 Investec Champions Cup as follows:

  • United Rugby Championship (8): The eight highest-ranked clubs based on their final finishing positions.
  • TOP 14 (8): The eight highest-ranked clubs based on their final finishing positions.
  • Gallagher Premiership Rugby (8): The eight highest-ranked clubs based on their final finishing positions.
  • If not already qualified, the winner of the 2024 Investec Champions Cup will take the place of the eighth-ranked club in its league.

When Does The 2024-2025 Investec Champions Cup Begin? When Is The Champions Cup Final?

The Investec Champions Cup and the EPCR Challenge Cup begin Dec. 6, and the four-round pool-play action ends Jan. 19, 2025. The Round of 16 starts on April 4, while the quarterfinals are April 11-13. The semifinals are May 2-4. 

The EPCR Championships weekend is in Cardiff, Wales at Principality Stadium. There are championship games on May 23 (EPCR Challenge Cup) and May 24 (Investec Champions Cup).
