Northampton Saints Withstand Furious Comeback For Rare Win In South Africa
The Northampton Saints beat the Vodacom Bulls after the South Africa rugby team made a late rally, only for the Saints to answer.
The Saints have marched back into the Investec Champions Cup Final conversation.
After beating Castres 38-8 in Round 1, the defending Gallagher Premiership champions, who reached the Champions Cup semifinals last season, traveled to South Africa and picked up one of the rarest wins of the competition.
The Northampton Saints saw their 22-7 lead evaporate in the final 20 minutes, with the Vodacom Bulls making it 22-21 in the 70'. But a successful penalty pick by Finn Smith, and late try by Tommy Freeman, gave the English club a 30-21 win over the Bulls in Pretoria on Dec. 14.

For much of the last three editions of the Champions Cup, and United Rugby Championship play, European teams have found winning in the Southern Hemisphere difficult, but the Bulls loss is the second for a South African team in two weeks, after the DHL Stormers lost to Toulon in Round 1.
The loss drops the Bulls to 0-0-2 after the club lost 27-5 in Round 1 against Saracens in England, meaning the Bulls likely will need to win both matches in Round 3 and 4 to advance to the knockout stages.
Bulls Vs. Northampton A Close Match In First Half
Northampton struck first in the 31st minute when George Hendy dotted down for an unconverted try, putting the visitors ahead 5-0.
The Bulls responded through their talisman, Marcell Coetzee, who powered over for a try in the 34th minute. Johan Goosen’s conversion gave the Bulls a 7-5 lead.
The Saints regained the advantage just before halftime when Juarno Augustus bulldozed over the line. Fin Smith added the extras, giving Northampton a 12-7 lead at the break, despite a yellow card to Emmanuel Iyogun late in the half.
Saints Hold Firm Amid Bulls Pressure
Northampton extended its lead with a penalty from Smith in the 53rd minute, followed by Tommy Freeman’s first try in the 59th, which Smith converted to make it 22-7.
The Bulls mounted a comeback, led by Cameron Hanekom, who scored twice in quick succession. Goosen converted both tries, narrowing the gap to 22-21 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Smith’s penalty in the 72nd minute provided the Saints with breathing room, and Freeman sealed the win in the 76th minute with his second try. Though Smith missed the conversion, Northampton closed out the match 30-21.
