Toulon Holds Off Glasgow Warriors In Thrilling Champions Cup Clash

RC Toulon held off a spirited Glasgow Warriors comeback to secure a narrow 30-29 victory in a dramatic Investec Champions Cup clash Saturday at Stade Mayol.

Toulon, inspired by a stellar performance from Baptiste Serin, who contributed 10 points with the boot, appeared to have control for much of the match. However, Glasgow pushed them to the brink with a late surge, falling just short after George Horne's crucial conversion in the dying moments.

Toulon’s Leicester Fainga'anuku opened the scoring early with a fifth-minute try, converted by Serin.

The French side extended its lead to 10-0 through a Marius Domon penalty, but Glasgow responded with a penalty try following a yellow card to Toulon’s Serin, levelling the score at 7-7.

Despite losing Lewis Ludlam to a yellow card, Toulon regained momentum through another Domon penalty to close the half 13-12 ahead, aided by a missed conversion from Duncan Weir after Josh McKay’s try for Glasgow.

The second half began with a flourish, as Fainga'anuku completed his brace in the 43rd minute, with Serin adding the extras.

Glasgow stayed in touch with a Duncan Weir penalty, but Toulon stretched its lead again through a try from Brian Alainu'uese and Serin’s conversion.

The Warriors mounted a comeback led by Olujare Oguntibeju's 54th-minute try, converted by Weir.

However, Serin kept Toulon ahead with a penalty, before Marius Domon’s yellow card in the 76th minute gave Glasgow hope.

Johnny Matthews crossed for Glasgow with just a minute to play, and Horne’s conversion set up a nail-biting finale. Despite the Warriors’ late efforts, Toulon clung to the one-point advantage to claim victory.

The result highlights Toulon’s resilience and Glasgow’s determination, setting the tone for an exciting Champions Cup campaign.
