Tipping the cap in the direction of the competition organizers and teams, there can be no denying that the multinational league has gone from strength to strength over the past four years.
Sitting a step or two ahead of the chasing pack, Leinster Rugby has been impervious thus far this season.
One rung down from the reigning champions, the Glasgow Warriors, and the team they beat in last season’s final, the Vodacom Bulls, have been the best of the rest.
Outside of these three sides, the competition has been wide open, with the Hollywoodbets Sharks currently occupying the all-important final home quarterfinal berth.
Pitting several contenders head-to-head this weekend, most notably the repeat of last year’s final, will take another clear step toward locking in the knockout bracket.
Ahead of the round’s action, here is a match-by-match breakdown of Round 16:
Glasgow Warriors Vs. Vodacom Bulls
Last season’s finalists both enter this fixture on the back of tight wins, which were preceded by challenging knockout losses in the EPCR competitions.
Crucially, this clash likely will decide who takes second spot on the table, and with it, a home run through to the final.
For Glasgow, the mission is simple: a draw or win of any kind keeps the Warriors in the second spot.
For the Bulls, a bonus-point win will take them one point clear, with two ‘easy’ home fixtures remaining against Cardiff and the Dragons.
Working in the South African side’s favor this week is the heavy injury toll the Warriors are managing.
Lacking their usual punch with heavy hitters Zander Fagerson, Matt Fagerson, Jack Dempsey, Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones all absent, the Warriors have named a heavily shuffled side for the clash.
On the flipside, the Bulls are picking from a near full deck, with a hefty Springbok-laden pack surely licking their lips.
Nevertheless, the Warriors always are a handful at home and won’t go down without a fight.
This fixture will be decided by how well the Warriors handle the Bulls' pack. If they can maintain parity at scrum and maul time, they have a real chance. Failure to do so, and things could get ugly.
This will be tight, but ultimately, we feel the Bulls' power game will be too much, and they’ll do enough to win. A bonus point will be mightily challenging, but not impossible. Prediction: Bulls by 6.
Cardiff Rugby Vs. Munster Rugby
Still reeling from a refereeing fiasco that ultimately cost it the match against the Bulls, Munster will arrive in Wales, baying for blood.
Cardiff, conversely, will be buoyed by its dominant dismantling of the Ospreys on ‘Judgment Day,’ which solidified the team's spot as the clearcut pick of the Welsh litter this season.
Entering the round in fifth place (Cardiff) and seventh place (Munster), a win is a non-negotiable for both sides.
Munster knows that three bonus points across the final three rounds is key if there are any ambitions of cracking the top 4.
For the home side, this will be their last home fixture of the season, before two exceptionally tough matches away to the Bulls and Stormers.
Thus, in truth, it is their most likely opportunity to nab a win and with it crucial log points.
Continuing the recurring theme of having an injury list the length of a Roman script, Munster has had to tinker with its lineup once again this round.
Despite missing several key players, Munster has been able to call on several experienced operators to fill the void.
In the front row, former Leinster loosehead Michael Milne will make his debut for the Reds, while Irish international Craig Casey returns at scrumhalf to partner with Jack Crowley in the halfbacks.
Locking in a strong outfit of its own, Cardiff has named an electric backline that will be confident in going toe-to-toe with Munster.
Neither side will be too keen on getting into an arm wrestle, so this one should make for a great spectacle.
Whichever side can shut down the other's complex attacking plays will come out on top, as we certainly see a high-scoring affair.
Despite sitting in a better position between the two sides, Cardiff has struggled when facing athletic packs like this Munster outfit. Containing the power game is not what the Welsh side is renowned for, and as such, Munster will look to dominate the physical exchanges.
Munster should hit the ground running and build a lead before weathering a few inevitable storms. Prediction: Munster by 12.
Zebre Parma Vs. Edinburgh Rugby
In a similar mood to Munster, Edinburgh will be stewing, having let slip a golden opportunity to beat the Sharks last time out.
Leading with time expired, the Scottish side mismanaged the closing stages of the fixture and allowed Makazole Mapimpi to slide over in the corner for the go-ahead score.
Returning from a trip to South Africa, Zebre pushed reigning champion Glasgow all the way in Round 15 and generally has been on an upward trajectory through the second half of the season.
Ordinarily, we would say Edinburgh is the overwhelming favorite in this clash, but such is the Italian side’s form, we can see this one going either way.
The key to victory in this clash will be the breakdown, where Edinburgh has some world-class operators.
Zebre thrives on quick ruck ball with its nimble pack and electric outside backs being more than capable of striking from anywhere.
Edinburgh, too, generally favors a quicker game, with its backline having some true global stars.
In a horses for courses gameplan, Edinburgh would be better served playing a tad more negative than normal and timing when it brings the backs into the fold, rather than looking to go wide early.
Psychologically, it will be intriguing to see how the Scottish side approaches this fixture.
Could Edinburgh be slightly damaged from last weekend, where a win would’ve catapulted the team up the leaderboard? If so, a fast start is non-negotiable.
Conversely, if Zebre can get out to a lead, its tails will be up. We see the latter situation unfolding and, as such, are going with the home team for a close key win. Prediction: Zebre by 4.
Emirates Lions Vs. Connacht Rugby
Two sides that, in reality, should be further up the leaderboard will take to the iconic Ellis Park Stadium in Saturday’s opener.
If you are not a fan of defense, this is the match for you!
Both sides employ a ‘you score 40 and we will score 41’ tactic, which, while highly entertaining, is not particularly conducive to consistency across a season.
Entering this clash, only the Dragons have conceded more than Connacht’s 403 points, with the Lions only marginally better with 375 points given up.
In short, this will come down to which side can score more, and for us, it will be Connacht.
The Lions certainly have a better power game, should they choose to go down that avenue, but it is hard to imagine them doing so.
For the visitors, they will feel aggrieved that a last-minute try that set up a potential match-winning conversion was ruled out against the Stormers last time out.
Although the odds are stacked against them, a bonus-point win keeps alive Connacht's hopes of a top-8 berth, with two very winnable matches against Edinburgh and Zebre to close out the season. Prediction: Connacht by 10.
Ospreys Vs. Dragons
A good old Welsh derby!
Judgment Day’s two losing sides will be hurting come into this clash, which no doubt will lead to a few sparks flying!
On paper, this is somewhat of a no-contest with the Dragons being far and away the worst side in the league this season, with a lone win to their name.
Although far from the spot they would like to be, the Ospreys still are in with a chance of making the top 8, but a loss in this one would end any chances of that happening, with a tour to South Africa still to come.
In terms of where this clash will be won, the Ospreys have far more routes to victory with a back line that is capable of tearing apart the leaky Dragons' defense.
To do this, the Ospreys will need to take away the Dragons’ strongest position group, which certainly is their back row. In this area, both sides have quality operators, which should make for an intriguing battle, in particular at the breakdown.
We can only see this match going one way, and that is the way of the men from Swansea. Prediction: Ospreys by 15+.
DHL Stormers Vs. Benetton
Just a whisker behind the rematch of last season’s final for our match of the week this round.
The clash between the Stormers and Benetton in Cape Town should be an absolute doozy!
Both sides have world-class players in their squads.
Although they do not play the same position, it will be intriguing to see how Stormers fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu matches up with Benetton center Tommaso Menoncello. Both youngsters are among the best players in the world at the pmoment in their respective positions.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the difference for his side last time out against Connacht, racing away for three tries and dominating the tactical kicking game. The former Bishops' student was immense.
Equally impressive for both club and country, Menoncello has flipped to outside center alongside his international midfield partner Ignacio Brex. This shift gives the ultra-physical 22-year-old a tad more time and space to hurt opposing defenses, and we can see him doing some real damage to the Stormers.
Currently, just a single log point separates the two sides, making this fixture somewhat of an eliminator.
Should Benetton pick up a second win on tour, it will give a touch of breathing room before a tough final two rounds against a pair of former champions in Munster and Glasgow.
The Stormers have the chance to push toward the top 4 with a relatively clear final two rounds against Cardiff and the Dragons still to come.
Across the board, this match is the tightest in terms of quality, making it a nightmare to predict!
For the sake of nothing more than the fun of an upset, we are back to Benetton to take this one in a high-scoring and thrilling clash! Prediction: Benetton by 1!
Scarlets Vs. Leinster Rugby
An immovable moves a shifty object!
On paper, this clash is a no-contest.
Losing just once this season with a heavily rotated squad, Leinster is the league behemoth.
The Scarlets are a coming force with a backbone of young talent who should guide the region nicely over the coming season.
In the here and now, although they have an electric young back line, we just can’t see the Welsh side unpicking the stingiest defense in professional rugby.
Across all competitions, the Jacques Nienaber-coached backstreet brawlers from Dublin have conceded an average of 12 points per match…
How has their attack done, do we hear you ask? Well, they score an average of 31 points per match.
Clinging to a glimmer of hope, Leinster will send a heavily rotated squad to this one, given there's a Champions Cup semifinal coming a week later.
This season,n however, it has not mattered who has pulled on the blue shirt. Prediction: Leinster by 20.
Ulster Rugby Vs. Hollywoodbets Sharks
Another clash with a huge amount riding on the outcome will unfold in Belfast when a desperate Ulster side hosts a Springbok-laden Sharks side.
Pound for pound, the Sharks have the better squad, but as their fans know all too well, the Durban Globetrotters are an infuriatingly inconsistent squad given their incredibly deep squad.
If South Africa were to name the Sharks side for a test match, you would expect them to beat a host of other nations. Yet, in both the URC and Investec Champions Cup, they have lost clashes they should’ve won or at least been competitive in.
This lack of stability means that though they are nearly safe in the top 4, a loss would set up a scenario where two wins and a bonus point in the final two rounds would be non-negotiable.
Ulster, on the other hand, is staring down a bit of history and not one it would want.
If Ulster does not qualify for the top 8, it will be the first in the team's long history that it has not qualified for the Investec Champions Cup.
Coming after this clash are fixtures away to Munster and Edinburgh, two matches in which Ulster will be underdog.
If the squad can upset the South African juggernaut, Ulster could face a scenario where one win from the final two gets it into the eight.
Reflecting the clash between the Warriors and Bulls, this match will come down to if Ulster can handle the power game of the Sharks.
Boasting a full Springboks front row, as well as bruisers Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi and company, this is easier said than done.
Add into the mix a handful of key injuries for Ulster, and the challenge has gotten a bit more daunting.
Crucially for Ulster, its star forward, Cormac Izuchukwu, returned in a major way with a try against Leinster last time out.
Long touted as a star for Ireland, these are the sort of fixtures Izuchukwu will need to stamp his authority on.
His battle with Eben Etzebeth is as fiery as it comes in professional rugby, so expect neither man to take a backward step.
Ulster clearly is in the "got to have it" territory, while the Sharks can afford a slip-up and likely still be fine given their softer ending to the season.
Even still, it is tough to see Ulster handling a fully locked and loaded Sharks side.
Essentially all things being equal, the Sharks should win this one, even if Ulster has taken strides forward under Richie Murphy. Prediction: Sharks by 8.
