Born on May 25, 1997, in Maidstone, England, Alex Mitchell joined Northampton’s academy in 2015 after developing his game at Sale Sharks and Lymm High School.
From the outset, Mitchell’s speed, vision and creative spark stood out.
After debuting for the Saints’ first team in 2017, he quickly made an impact, helping the Wanderers win back-to-back Premiership Rugby Shield titles and lifting the Premiership Rugby Cup in 2019.
Mitchell’s 2023–2024 campaign has been nothing short of career-defining.
He scored two tries in the Saints’ Champions Cup quarterfinal win over the Bulls, orchestrated play in their narrow semifinal loss to Leinster and capped his incredible season by scoring the decisive try in the Premiership final victory over Bath.
On the international stage, Mitchell has steadily climbed the ranks.
A product of England’s age-group sides, he made his senior debut in 2021, coming off the bench to score against Tonga at Twickenham.
Despite a brief hiatus from national selection, he returned in 2023, starting three Rugby World Cup matches and playing a pivotal role in England’s run to a third-place finish.
This year, he’s continued to deliver for England, adding tries in the Six Nations and during their summer tour of Japan and New Zealand.
Mitchell has solidified his spot in the Red Rose setup with four international tries to his name.
Mitchell’s rugby pedigree runs deep—his brother James also played professionally, joining Northampton during the 2019 Rugby World Cup, while another brother, Jordan, was a standout scrumhalf and cricketer.
As Northampton chases European glory in Cardiff, Mitchell’s poise and playmaking could prove decisive.
The Saints faithful—and fans across the Atlantic—will be watching closely as their No. 9 looks to etch his name into club history.
