Equipe Quebec and Atlantis were brilliant in the New York 7s, but there was more to like in the women's bracket.

The women's brackets at the New York 7s produced some superb rugby on a long day of competition live-streamed on FloRugby.

The champions were legion, but were perhaps best represented by the performance of Atlantis girls in beating Equipe Quebec, and the Quebecois team beating a strong Scion squad.

Scion was powerful and smart and pushed aside some impressive outfits, including Lindenwood University. Jade McGrath, Alysha Washington and Maggie Myes led an aggressive bunch, but 2016-17 Sorensen Award-Winner Ilona Maher was a monster.

But Equipe Quebec handled Scion by playing stalwart defense, not letting Scion break through defensive line, and by showing some superb pace and support running.

Meanwhile, Atlantis was sublime. The teamwork within that squad was as good as any team's in New York. Their restarts, using Julia Riekena to tap the ball back and then quickly shifting possession to a runner in space, was almost perfect.

Clara Lemal-Brown helped spark an offense with Ariana Ramsey that sliced and diced offenses all kinds of ways. Alex Dimarco and Emily Henrich led a defensive effort that essentially demoralized a solid Upright Rugby team in the final. Upright was unable to get anything going, and repeatedly DiMarco and others ripped the ball away to create tries - seven of them, in fact - in a 38-7.

"I knew we had a good team going in, but I didn't think we'd be able to play so well together right off the bat," said Dimarco.

"We all just trusted each other in the end, both offensively and defensively," added Henrich.

There were other women's winners, with Phoenix, a compilation side of college-age players out of Montreal, taking the college bracket over Royal Military College. and Nova Scotia Keltics took the women's club bracket. Upright Rugby got some measure of revenge in a final, taking the HS Club final 36-0 over PEI with a very young squad.

So it was almost a Canadian sweep, with Atlantis the lone USA team to win.
