Women's College Player Of The Week: Viv Garcia, Cal State Northridge
Cal State Northridge flyhalf Viva Garcia gets the nod as the women's college rugby player of the week after leading her team to an upset win at Arizona.
Cal State Northridge flyhalf Viv Garcia earns FloRugby's Women's College Player of the Week honor after scoring two tries and helping lead her team's attack in an upset win over Arizona this past Saturday.
CSUN went 1-5 in Gold Coast Conference play last year, but the Matadors might be in a position for a breakout seasonfollowing their 45-34 victory in Tucson, AZ, which was also their first league win of 2018.
Garcia was at the center of that. She scored two tries, but that was not why she got this recognition. Garcia's field vision, how she worked with her fellow backs, and how she directed CSUN's attack all played a part in the Matadors racking up 45 points against an Arizona team that held them scoreless a year ago.
A smart, effective leader, Garcia has some young players to work alongside this season. Northridge doesn't have many Division I sports programs, so playing at this level is a challenge. With an influx of talented freshmen, the team is on the rise, and Garcia is emblematic of that.
