Women's College Player Of The Week: Julian White, GCU
Julian White scores tries, but it's the other stuff that makes her one of Grand Canyon's leading players.
In Grand Canyon University's 62-0 dismantling of UCLA this past weekend, center Julian White scored three tries.
But that's not the only reason she's our FloRugby Women's College Player of the Week.
White, who has been a part of the 'Lopes program since it began in the fall of 2016, is more than just a finisher.
"She has been very strong on defense and a good tackler over the past 18 months," GCU head coach Alison Price said. "This spring season, her offensive running and attacking skills have been improving and she contributed to our win against UCLA."
But, said Price, there's more to it than that.
"Her dedication to training and strength and conditioning has also contributed to her success," the coach added. "She played sevens this past summer with Tempe and played with the Stars at the Elite 7s in Dartmouth this past August. Julian has grown as an athlete, rugby player, and teammate over the past 18 months and has been a consistent contributor to the GCU women's program."
It shows in the team's performance. Grand Canyon has been tallying points, for sure, with Arisbel Gonzalez, Natashe Opoku, and Daeanera Tuaua all getting on the scoreboard with frequency. But the real source of GCU's 9-0 start (including two forfeits and a 4-0 day at the Scrum By The Sea on Nov. 5 in San Diego) has been defense. The 'Lopes have only given up six tries and only four in their three league games.
As Grand Canyon prepares to host UC San Diego this Saturday, the 'Lopes have to be feeling good and White's play has a lot to do with that.
