World Rankings Update: Eagles Helped By Win, But Don't Move Up
Despite upsetting Scotland, the USA Men's 15s team will not move up in the rankings—but the team will gain ground on the countries it's chasing.
Despite upsetting Scotland, the USA Men's 15s team will not move up in the rankings.
The formula World Rugby uses for the rankings rewards winners and penalizes losers but caps the gain and loss at 2.0 points (3.0 if won by 15 or more and 6.0 in a World Cup game won by 15 or more).
As a result, the Eagles will improve from 69.39 points to 71.39 but remain ranked at No. 15 overall. That would have been enough to bypass No. 13 Italy and No. 14 Tonga, but Italy beat Japan, gaining about 0.7 points and thus keeping ahead of the Eagles. Tonga gained 0.5 points and that is also enough to stay ahead of the USA.
Meanwhile, Canada drops almost two points after losing to Russia, at home, by 23, and slides to No. 22 behind Hong Kong.
The Eagles' clash with Canada this weekend might have an influence. The USA could gain about 0.4 points, which might just barely be enough to catch Italy. And with Tonga playing Fiji next week, a Tongan loss could also benefit the Eagles, who could conceivably end June at No. 13.
And finally, given South Africa's win over England and Scotland's loss to the USA, Scotland drops from No. 6 to No, 7 but stays ahead of France. Scotland's game against 10th-ranked Argentina could see those two swap places.
