Injury Forces Kelter Out Of Rugby World Cup 7s
Alev Kelter is ruled out of the Rugby World Cup Sevens due to injury and Kelsi Stockert takes her place.
USA Women's Sevens star Alev Kelter has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup Sevens due to injury.
Kelter has been working her way back from injury, and the team's medical staff said Tuesday she should not play this weekend in San Francisco.
Kelsi Stockert will replace Kelter. Stockert last suited up for the USA Sevens team in Dubai, where she came off the bench to score the winner in the quarterfinals against New Zealand.
The USA went on to finish second in that tournament, and that try probably cost New Zealand the World Series crown.
Stockert has been serving as a FloRugby correspondent in camp.
Kelter has been lauded as one of the USA's best players. The go-to kicker (a role likely now taken over by captain Nicole Heavirland) for the Eagles, Kelter is also a superb tackler and dangerous attacking player. Relatively new to rugby, the Alaskan native was a standout hockey player at Wisconsin.
Stockert is also from the Northeast, having picked up the game as a high school freshman playing for the Budd Bay Steelheads, a team she helped to national prominence. She went on to win a national club 7s title with Seattle and has been capped at 15s as well as sevens. She has accomplished the rare feat of scoring tries against New Zealand in both 15s and sevens.
The USA Women open the tournament at 12:34 PT Friday against China in the round of 16 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.
