Sunday brings the USA Selects a third chance to make a first impression, and it won't be easy as the America team takes on a very smooth Argentina XV.

The Selects lost 33-18 to Uruguay XV on Wednesday in a game that was much, much closer than the score might indicate. The game was 21-18 well into the final quarter, and only a try off a scrum, and then another at the end of the game when the USA was pressing made it a 15-points result.

However, that's not to say the Selects should be thrilled with the team's performance. There were far too many bad passes out of contact and knock-ons - especially knock-ons when they were trying to get out of trouble.

The support at the breakdown was inconsistent, leading to poaching turnovers and holding-on penalties.

But, said head coach Scott Lawrence, there were positives as well.

"There were plenty of opportunities for us to score," he told FloRugby. "That's the positive aspect, as you don't get that many in international play."

But, channeling the singer Kenny Rogers, Lawrence said "you've got to know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em." Meaning, essentially, there's a time to pass and a time to eat the ball and take the tackle.

"Right now the decision-makers on the field are learning what that means under a different sort of pressure than they're used to," said Lawrence.

Notes: One aspect of Wednesday's game was a disturbing inability of the deep three to be secure under high kicks. This, said Lawrence, was due in large part to a combination of sun and wind that made handling the high ball tough. He pointed to other teams having the same issue on the same day.

Still, the Selects will be to make sure fewer kicks land on the grass on Sunday.
