Cal looks to make it two West Coast 7s events in a row with a nicely balanced squad set for Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay this weekend.

The Bears will field upperclassmen such as juniors Keanu Andrade, Christian Dyer, and Thomas Spradling, as well as seniors Trent Lockyear, Zac Tavenner, Elliot Webb, and Nic Mirhashem.

Those players cover the gamut from playmakers (Webb and Andrade), hard-hitting forwards (Mirhashem and Spradling), effective midfielders (Dyer), and finishers (Lockyear and Tavenner).

But Cal has some youth, too, and it's a group of young players that will cause opponents all sorts of problems.

Nick Bloom, a versatile and tough player from Edina HS, in Minnesota, and Luke Freeman, whose length-of-the-field run won the Boys HS National Championships club bracket for Danville this past spring, are players are young, but very experienced.

Sam Walsh, who has been a HS All American while also playing in high school in New Zealand, has superb field vision and could be an effective understudy to Webb.

Kevin Saunders, a sophomore and another Danville product, can, like Bloom, play both as a back and a forward.

Head coach Jack Clark and associate head coach Tom Billups will be sure to get all of these players and the rest time on the field. But it's not charity. Everyone deserves to be there, and given that no other college was able to beat either the older or younger Cal team at the West Coast 7s opener, the Bears have to be considered favorites.
