The second week of the Heineken Champions Cup window brought us the return game against the Newcastle Falcons, in a ground and a city in which I spent four seasons and built many relationships.

This is Argentina and Edinburgh star Juan Pablo Socino's regular weekly column

After our win at Murrayfield, Newcastle selected a team that was reinforced by some of their stars, such as Sinti Sinoti, Niki Goneva, Toby Flood and Mark Wilson. It was obvious they were not happy with the loss nor the way they played that day and were chasing a win to ensure they were still with chances of advancing to quarterfinals.

For us, it was a long, busy week, that allowed us to correct our mistakes and plan in detail our strategy for the game.

We knew they were going to be able to select a stronger team, but we decided to focus on our strengths, those that had allowed us to win the first game.

It has been many years now since the last time Edinburgh played in the European Cup quarterfinal and winning in Newcastle would put us in a favorable position, needing to then defeat a Toulon side that might be eliminated and then play the decisive game against Montpellier at home. All of this gave the game an added value; yet we could not think too much into the future as the challenge the Falcons posed did not allow us to.

As we normally do, we traveled to Newcastle on the eve of the game, allowing us ample time to rest, find our bearings and good through the whole process of hydration, feeding and active recovery in a swimming pool.

The fact that the game was in Newcastle allowed me the opportunity to catch up for coffee with my brother. These are opportunities we use; despite not living too far away, our seasons are so busy that we seldom have the time.

As for the match itself, it was emotional to go back to Kingston Park, walk those alleys, meet old friends. But one must be professional and I had to focus on the job ahead and give my best.

We failed to control the ball in the first half for long phases as we had planned which led to a changing game, mostly with regards to possession. Because of this, we went to the break losing 8-6 because of a missed tackle. The Falcons’ points were scored by two of their returning stars – Sinoti Sinoti touched down and Toby Flood added a penalty.

In the second half, we needed to do the same as in the first, but with more control. Those were the orders our coaches gave us.

We came out stronger and more precise, being able to score two tries and generating other failed opportunities.

I only played the final minutes, but what one brings to the team is not only measured by the amount of minutes on the field but by all the hard work done during the week.

The 21-8 win gave us four very important points, away; in fact, it was the first win outside of Edinburgh in eight months. Not only that, it keeps our hopes of reaching the quarterfinals more than alive. It was a happy return home!

But, rugby does not give us a break and this weekend we are back in the Guinness PRO14, in our Scottish derby against Glasgow Warriors. We will also be playing for the 1872 Cup, which gives this a game and added twist, and gives us some extra motivation not only on the club, but in the city as a whole.

It is certainly a special week, more so this being so close to Xmas.

El segundo fin de semana de la ventana de la Heineken Champions Cup trajo el partido de vuelta contra Newcastle Falcons, en una cancha y una ciudad en la que pasé cuatro temporadas y forjé muchísimas relaciones. 

Luego de nuestra victoria en Murrayfield, Newcastle seleccionó un equipo reforzado con estrellas del calibre de Sinoti Sinoti, Niki Goneva, Toby Flood y Mark Wilson. Quedó obviamente demostrado que no quedaron conformes con el resultado ni con la performance en ese partido y buscaban una victoria para poder seguir con chances de clasificar a cuartos de final.

Fue una semana larga, de mucho trabajo que nos permitió poder corregir errores y también planificar bien en detalle la estrategia seleccionada para la revancha.

Sabíamos de la posibilidad de ellos de reforzar el equipo, pero decidimos concentrarnos en nuestras fortalezas, esas que nos habían ayudado a ganar el primer partido.

Hace muchos años que Edinburgh no avanza a una instancia de cuartos de final en la Copa de Europa y ganar en Newcastle nos pondría en una situación muy favorable, teniendo que jugar contra un posiblemente eliminado Toulon para después definir con Montpellier de local. Todo esto le daba un enorme valor agregado al partido; a la vez no podíamos pensar demasiado a futuro porque el desafío de los Falcons no nos lo permitía.

Se viajó a Newcastle el día anterior como hacemos habitualmente, para llegar con tiempo, descansar, instalarse y poder llevar a cabo todo el proceso de hidratación, alimentación y recuperación activa en piscina.

El hecho de que fuera en Newcastle me dio la posibilidad de poder ver a mi hermano y compartir un café con él. Estas son oportunidades que tratamos de no dejar pasar ya que a pesar de no vivir muy lejos, las temporadas son muy ocupadas y tenemos poco tiempo libre.

En cuanto al partido, fue una emoción fuerte volver al estadio, al Kingston Park, recorrer esos pasillos, reencontrase con mucha gente querida. Pero uno es profesional y tiene que abstraerse y dar lo mejor de sí.

El primer tiempo no supimos controlar la pelota por demasiadas fases como habíamos planificado lo cual llevó a un partido muy cambiante sobre todo en cuanto a posesión. De esta manera, luego de un tackle fallido, nos fuimos al descanso abajo por 8 a 6. Los puntos de los Falcons anotados por dos de esos refuerzos – Sinoti Sinoti con el try y Toby Flood con el penal.

Necesitábamos seguir haciendo lo mismo que en la primera parte, pero con más control. Esas fueron las palabras de los entrenadores, sumado al compromiso con el tackle el cual había fallado en algunas ocasiones.

El segundo tiempo nos vio mucho más fueres y precisos, pudiendo marcar dos tries y generando otras oportunidades.

Me tocó jugar sólo los últimos minutos, pero el aporte que se hace en un deporte de conjunto muchas veces supera el tiempo en la cancha y pasa por el trabajo que se hace durante la semana.

El triunfo por 21 a 8 nos permitió sumar cuatro puntos muy importantes, de visitante; de hecho, fue la primer victoria del equipo afuera de casa en ocho meses. Además, nos mantiene más que vivas las chances de pasar a cuartos de final. ¡Fue un regreso a casa más feliz!

El rugby no nos da descanso y este fin de semana volvemos al Guinness PRO14 contra nuestro clásico rival, Glasgow Warriors. Además, disputamos la Copa 1872, lo que hace que sea un partido distinto, generando una motivación especial no solo a nosotros en el club pero en la ciudad.

Es una semana especial, indudablemente, más que nada porque todo esto es en vísperas de Navidad.
