It wasn’t to be.

Preparation for the European Cup quarterfinal was a very intense week of training with the team very focused.

Personally, I went through a number of emotions; the team was named on Tuesday and I learnt there and then that unfortunately, I wasn’t going to be amongst the 23-man match squad.

The negative of knowing so early is the fact that you can’t change that decision; regardless of how much effort you put into the week, the team has already been selected. On the plus side, if there is one, is the capacity to know the place you have and what an important role each little component has to be able to achieve the goal at the end of the week.

Many players find the feeling of exclusion hard to deal with; their efforts, subconsciously, drops without understanding the domino effect this can have.

In order to have a good week of preparation, every player in the big squad is needed. Obviously, those who are playing are key, but those who don’t have to analyze the opposition and try to recreate movements and strategies so that the starting XV can be prepared.

It is not easy, but it is crucial to understand that today one might be on this side; when the roles are reverted, you need your excluded teammates to do the same to help you be ready.

Having explained this, we had a perfect week – if the term exists. Each squad member – coaches, medics, players – were at their top capacity.

The city was prepared for a party and there were about 40 thousand fans, including some 10 thousand that crossed the sea to inundate of red a Murrayfield stadium that was as noisy as ever.

The Crowd On Its Feet

Unfortunately, the game didn’t come our way; it had two teams playing similar rugby, without taking risks on their half, slowing down rucks and mauls, using the foot and hoping the opposition would make a mistake or get bored first.

A very physical game, each knock had the crowd on its feet.

The first half was so even that we went to the break drawing 10-all. We slipped two try-scoring opportunities deep in their field and that would prove costly.

Due to the importance of the game, our coaches decided for the first time ever to use the national team’s changing room. After the first half, we felt that our tactical plan was working and we could control Munster’s game plan.

The second half was very similar to the first one, with both teams kicking to the corners and fighting each ruck as if it was the last one. With ten minutes to go, a penalty put is in the lead.

It seemed that another chance was coming our way, with a kickable penalty 40 meters out in front of the posts, loudly celebrated by the fans as it would mean a real opportunity of stretching the lead to six points.

Instead, the referee controversially reversed the penalty because of a push. They kicked to touch to position themselves in our 22 meters.

From that platform, they launched their attacks and eight minutes from fulltime, they scored the winning try.

Despite our team fighting back in those final minutes, with more will and energy that tactics, it wasn’t to be.

The Champions Cup dream is over. We lost a huge opportunity although we leave with the head held high knowing that the team gave everything.

La preparación para el cuarto de final de la Copa Europea tuvo una semana de entrenamiento muy intensa y con el equipo súper concentrado.

Desde lo personal, viví muchísimas sensaciones; el equipo se anunció el martes y supe que lamentablemente no iba a ser parte de los 23 jugadores que iban a disputar el partido.

Lo negativo de enterarse tan temprano en la semana es la incapacidad de afectar la decisión; sin importar el esfuerzo el equipo ya está seleccionado. A favor, si es que hay, es la capacidad de saber el lugar que uno tiene y el importante rol que cada pequeño componente tiene dentro de la semana para que se logre el objetivo del fin de semana.

Muchos jugadores encuentran difícil la sensación de ser parte de la preparación cuando son excluidos de la convocatoria; por lo tanto, su esfuerzo (no siempre conscientemente) disminuye sin poder entender el efecto dominó que esto genera. 

Para que una semana de entrenamiento salga bien, se necesita de todos y cada uno de los jugadores del plantel. Obviamente los que van a jugar, pero también los que no ya que se encargaran de analizar al rival para poder recrear sus movimientos y estrategias contra el equipo titular, exigiendo y preparándolos de la mejor manera.

No es fácil pero es primordial entender que hoy es uno el que esta de este lado; cuando los roles se inviertan, vas a necesitar que tus compañeros excluidos también puedan hacer su trabajo correctamente.

Habiendo explicado esto, la semana fue perfecta – si es que el término realmente existe. Cada componente del plantel = técnicos, médicos y jugadores – estuvieron al 100 por ciento de sus capacidades.

La ciudad estaba preparada para una fiesta, hubo casi cuarenta mil hinchas incluyendo a unos 10 mil que cruzaron el mar y tiñeron de rojo parte de un estadio de Murrayfield que tuvo un partido disputado, con mucho nervio.

Hacia Levantar A La Gente

Lamentablemente el partido no se nos dio; fueron dos equipos que plantearon el partido de una manera muy similar, sin arriesgar en su propio campo, tomándose su tiempo para armar los rucks, salir con el pie y esperar a que el otro cometiese el error primero, a ver quien se aburría primero. Fue un partido muy físico, donde cada golpe hacia levantar a la gente.

El primer tiempo fue tan parejo que terminó 10 a 10. Nosotros dejamos pasar dos oportunidades claves dentro de las 5 yardas rivales que luego nos iban a pasar factura.

Debido a la importancia del partido, el staff técnico había decidido por primera vez utilizar el vestuario del equipo nacional. Ahí nos encontramos luego de 40minutos, sintiéndonos bien ya que el plan táctico funcionaba y habíamos podido limitar a Munster en su juego. 

El segundo tiempo fue claramente igual, ambos equipos pateando la pelota mucho a los wings rivales y luchando cada ruck como el último. Logramos separarnos en el marcador con un penal acercándonos a los últimos 10 minutos de juego. 

Luego de un ataque nuestro en las 40 yardas rivales, conseguimos un penal en frente a los postes, muy celebrado por nuestra gente, ya que estiraríamos la diferencia a seis puntos.

Lamentablemente, en una decisión controvertida, el referee del partido decidió dar vuelta el penal por un "empujón". Penal que ellos patearon al touch para ponerse en situación de ataque en nuestros 22 metros.

Desde esa plataforma, se lanzaron al ataque y a ocho minutos del cierre nos quebraron con el try que fue definitorio.

Si bien el equipo luchó esos últimos minutos con más garra y energía que táctica, no alcanzó.

 Se nos acabó el sueño de la Champions Cup. Una importante oportunidad perdida aunque con la tranquilidad de que se dejó todo en la cancha.
