An All-Time NFL Rugby Team
An All-Time NFL Rugby Team
What would a rugby team of the NFL's greats look like? Here's our best shot at a starting XV.
What a rugby team look like if you could choose from every player in NFL history?
Well, there are so many combinations you could go with which would be a fearsome unit it's nigh impossible to select a perfect squad, but here's our best shot at it:
1. Jonathan Ogden
Any great rugby team starts up front with a powerful scrum, so setting the tone in the front row is crucial. Who better to get a good shove on for your team than a 6'9, 345 lb, 11-time pro bowler like Jonathan Ogden.
2. Aaron Donald
Donald is a vicious hitter and an athletic freak that has rarely been seen in the history of the NFL. He's a perfect candidate to anchor the scrum.
3. Haloti Ngata
Ngata was one of the best defensive tackles in the league while in Baltimore, and at 6'4, 340 lbs he is another mammoth of a front-rower. He also has a background in rugby, helping lead Highland Rugby to the High School national championship as a teenager.
4. Reggie White
When it comes to sheer physicality, strength, and athleticism, it might be impossible to find a better sample than Reggie White. His aggression and smarts on the gridiron would also fare well on a rugby pitch. The 2nd all-time sack leader can't be left off the field.
5. JJ Watt
Perhaps the most all-around talented lineman to ever play football, JJ Watt has all the skills to make an unreal second rower. He'd be a menace at the lineout, both offensively and defensively, and you know his soft hands and amazing feet would set him up well to offload and set up teammates. But ultimately his biggest impact would be his domination in the contact with and without the ball.
6. Ray Lewis
You need a berserker at blind side flanker, and who fits that bill better than Ray Lewis? One of the smartest, meanest, and greatest linebackers to ever touch the field, Lewis could step onto a rugby pitch and immediately disrupt any opposing attack.
7. Lawrence Taylor
The greatest to ever play defense. Period. LT likely still shows up in many quarterbacks' nightmares. It's safe to assume he'd be the same kind of night terror to opposing fly-halves.
8. Rob Gronkowski
Could you imagine Gronk on an 8-man pick? Good grief. Arguably the hardest man to bring down single-handedly in NFL history, Gronk would be instant gainline in any rugby game. Furthermore, his supreme athletic ability and incedible hands would make him a dangerous threat in the lineout and in open play.
9. Russell Wilson
Russ is a world class leader, has a brilliant mind on the field, and possesses a mind-blowing ability to get himself and his team out of sticky situations. The combination of his skills and his temperament would make him the ideal guy to run the show. The fact he was a D1 collegiate baseball player also shows he is just one of those guys that's good at whatever he does.
10. Patrick Mahomes
Like Russ, Mahomes is another one of those guys that you know is just good at every sport he tries. Having been drafted right out of high school to the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball, Mahomes has always been a multi-sport star. His incredible vision, distribution skills, and ability to manipulate defenders would make him an ideal fly-half. He is a pass-first guy, but when he needs to he is more than adept at showing and going on his own. Can he kick? We don't know, but it's Patrick Mahomes and we think he could learn it pretty quick.
11. Randy Moss
Arguably the fastest and leapiest player to ever play in the NFL, Randy Moss was a genuine threat to score every time he touched the ball. It would come as no surprise if he brought the same finishing abilities he has on the gridiron to the rugby pitch. Oh, and he's shown he knows how to offload:
12. Adrian Peterson
Who could get you on the front foot better than Adrian Peterson? Immensely powerful, fast, and shifty, AP is the ideal center you want on any team. If he's not smashing over the advantage line, he's probably off to the races fixing to score. Think Manu Tuilagi, but bigger and more athletic... yikes.
13. Troy Polamalu
The lone defensive player in the backline, we need someone who can cover a lot of ground and make a lot of tackles in the open field. There's hardly ever been a better operator at these traits than Polamalu, who has a knack for making plays at any given moment. His great anticipation and ability to read offenses would serve him well to shut down backline movements.
14. Calvin Johnson
Megatron is a ridiculous freak of an athlete that could likely also play a role in the back row with his strength, size, and speed. However, his incredible aerial ability seems better suited for the back three and so he finds himself on the wing.
15. Odell Beckham Jr.
There may have been other potential options here, but a rugby team needs a kicker, and Odell Beckham Jr. has one heck of leg. He also is one of the best athletes in the NFL and his multi-talented abilities would make him lethal from the fullback position.
